HISTORY OF THE
FOXBOROUGH COUNTRY CLUB INC.

1953 to 1992

Dedication

To the pioneering people who lived in an era when their generous volunteer efforts and Personal contributions were the only way to make our Club possible.

Foreword

The Foxborough Country Club Historical Committee started in 1986 with Claude Young, Chairman Tom O'Leary, Bud Dudley, Irv Henderson and AIdo Carbonetti. Many meetings were held with facts, comments, and anecdotes recorded on tape. Progress slowed after the passing of Claude and Tom. The project was revived in late 1991, when others joined the remaining Committee and helped complete the effort.

This document provides important chronological information. It also depicts a few of the many anecdotal events that occurred during the evolution of the course from its inception in 1953 to its maturation in 1992. The heroes described are those who gave freely of their time and skills without compensation.

The history of the Foxborough Country Club is a story of how a fine golf course was built with the efforts of a group of pioneering individuals who didn't know it couldn't be done. It was not the usual situation of a few wealthy people pooling their financial resources. Instead, this was a volunteer effort and an accomplishment that was made by golfers of modest means, but boundless enthusiasm. Their most common goal was to provide a high quality facility with membership fees affordable for the average wage earner. This situation, supported by The Foxboro Company when the need was great, made the intended goal achievable even when it sometimes looked extremely distant. These were the ingredients that existed for building the golf course. This history highlights the significant events, how they fell into place, and the generous spirit of the people involved in bringing the Club to its current state.
