GROUND BREAKING / FIRST NINE
When Course Architech Geoff Cornish completed the plans for the nine-hole course we had agreed to, we were ready for the groundbreaking ceremony. This took place in September 1955 with the Honorable Joseph Martin, Speaker of the House of Representatives (Wash DC), turning the first shovels of earth. Others present were the Selectmen of the Town of Foxborough and members of the committees.
BUILDING THE FIRST NINE
The first contractor (a Walpole resident) hired to begin work on the course was contacted because he had done some work for The Foxboro Company. Claude Young described the conditions
to him and asked if he had the equipment and ability to handle the job. He was told he had to be insured and that his work would be on a time schedule basis. According to Claude, the contractor was very confident that he could handle the job and meet our specifications. Unfortunately, he was wrong. His equipment could not handle the many huge rocks and resulted in frequent equipment breakage. At one point on the 3rd hole, now the 17th, one of his tractors got stuck in the mud. He sent in another tractor to pull it out and that too got stuck. The Club hired another tractor at $100/hour to pull the two tractors free.
