THE BEGINNING

The history of The Foxborough Country Club began in 1953 with a problem encountered by The Foxboro Company 4-Ball League Golf Committee. The popularity of golf was increasing so rapidly that the Committee was finding it difficult to locate courses available to schedule their matches.

Building a course was an audacious idea but the need was so urgent it seemed reasonable to at least look into the matter. A Feasibility Committee was organized and authorized to investigate and bring in a report with costs, land availability and prospects of support from interested parties. In the spring of 1953, the committee began its work. The members were: Bud Dudley, Chairman; Claude Young, Pep Tracy, Ben Fuller and Henry Desautel. The Foxboro Company Ten Year Club provided the committee with expense money.

The original thought was for a very modest nine-hole course without frills or luxuries. After visiting several courses; Cedar Hill, Heather Hill, Pine Valley, Sharon, and Franklin, consulting with the MGA, and after many hours of discussions, the committee submitted a favorable report for building our own course. The committee's conclusion was that, with a very strong effort of volunteer help and some financial support, a golf course that would serve our urgent need could be built in the town of Foxborough.

Although several top executives of The Foxboro Company offered their full support they decided that the course should be a project involving the people of both Foxborough and Mansfield. The Foxboro Company would help only as an outside agency.
